[dorky-dog] Top 6 Comic Book Hero Dogs of All Times

fun: 6

Considering my current profession it was inevitable that they would meet. You say not so. How can dorkiness and K9 narcotics detection ever have a meeting ground. K9, explosives, narcotics  is serious stuff  and there is no way in the world it is possible.

Unless of course the dork in question  is a huge batman fan and had it on a list of requirements for when she was looking for personal K9 that the breed be the same breed as Batman’s dog. Besides if a German shepherd is good enough for Batman , its damn well good enough for me.  Who am I to question the Dark Knights logic?  He is hot, intelligent ,  and can train dogs into being caped crusaders.

I’m going to go on a limb and say German Shepherds are the most awesome-est dogs on the planet just because its on the list twice. As far as cool dogs in comic books go, German Shepherds win by a landslide.

Here is my  list of the top 5 comic book dogs of all time, feel free to input and tell me of other comic book dogs I may have missed .

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

BREED: German Shepherd

HUMAN Handler: Batman

Ace was a German Shepherd Dog originally owned by an engraver named John Wilker. He was found by Batman and Robin after his master was kidnapped by a gang of counterfeiters. Batman used Ace to try to locate Wilker. Because he had already placed a large number of “lost dog” announcements for Ace in his civilian identity of Bruce Wayne, he was concerned that anyone recognizing Ace (who had a prominent star-shaped marking on his forehead) might make the connection between Bruce Wayne and Batman. To forestall that problem, he hastily improvised a hood-like mask for the dog that incorporated the bat emblem as a dog tag dangling from Ace’s collar. Ace was subsequently christened “The Bat-Hound” by a criminal he helped Batman to apprehend.

Wilker later took a new job that made it difficult for him to take care of Ace, so he left the dog to Bruce Wayne. Wilker was never aware that Ace was the Bat-Hound or that Bruce Wayne was Batman.

ABILITIES: being cool enough to be Batman’s dog

HUMAN Handler: Superman

BREED: kryptonian askal ( theoretically )

As explained in his first appearance, Krypto was originally the toddler Kal-El’s dog while they were on Krypton. Jor-El, testing prototypes for the rocket that would eventually send Kal-El to Earth, decided to use Krypto as a test subject. However, Krypto’s rocket was knocked off-course; the rocket drifted through space for years until it eventually landed on Earth, where Krypto was reunited with the now-teenaged superhero, Superboy.

Super strength, speed, durability and stamina, flight, physical invulnerability, super-breath and lung capacity (including freeze breath) expelled through bark, super-hearing, vision powers (including x-ray vision, heat vision, telescopic vision, and microscopic vision), and various other sensory powers (including the ability to see, hear, and feel the entire electromagnetic spectrum). Krypto’s lung capacity and super hearing as a canine Kryptonian are somewhat greater than Superman’s as well.

HUMAN Handler: n/a ( he heads the security forces of Knowhere)

Heading up the security forces in a place called Knowhere, Cosmo met a distraught Nova shortly after he witnessed a female alien with the alias Suspensor turned into a zombie right before his eyes. She attacked, and Nova accidentally killed the woman in self defense only to have her allies Cynosure, Crater and Discharge blame him for her death. Unable to battle the three powerful aliens, Nova retreated and was surprised yet again with his discovery of a talking dog. However, Cosmo gained Nova’s trust and friendship, and the two set out to find the fiend responsible for all the recent deaths on Knowhere.

Cosmo has heightened senses of a dog, and he can talk. In addition, Cosmo has access to all of Knowhere’s technology and information resources when he needs it. Cosmo is a high-level telepath with the added abilities to create defensive shields wide enough to block a corridor and strong enough to deflect energy blasts, and project powerful mind blasts of tremendous force. The level of his powers has yet to be revealed, but Cosmo has proven himself to be powerful enough to take on a being such as Adam Warlock single handedly, and strong enough to unleash a telekinetic blast potent enough to disable two teams of super beings.

BREED: German Shepherd

HUMAN Handler: Delirium

Delirium, is the youngest of the Endless, yet still older than the rest of existence. She is usually quite short, and thin, and looks no older than a fourteen year-old human girl. One of her eyes is blue, and the other is green. Her hair changes style and color constantly, as do her clothes. Her shadow never reflects her shape, and is tangible, like velvet. She is said to smell of sweat, late nights, sour wine, and old leather. Her sigil in the galleries of the other Endless is a multicolored, abstract swirl. Her realm is a chaotic, constantly changing mass of colors and strange objects and shapes, and contains a sundial with the inscription “Tempus Frangit” (“time breaks,” a Latin pun on the phrase “Tempus Fugit”, “time flies”.) Delirium travels with a “guardian” of sorts, a German Shepherd dog named Barnabas, on indefinite loan from her brother Destruction.

the ability to live as long as the endless and not go insane with an insane handler

nudork Lockjaw

Lockjaw was born on the island of Attilan, formerly in the Atlantic Ocean. Lockjaw resembles a giant bulldog and serves in the capacity of the Inhumans’ teleporter and escort to the Royal Family of the Inhumans. Many times he has brought Inhumans to Earth and back again. At times, his powers have been manipulated by evil forces, most usually Maximus the Mad.

Lockjaw and the Royal Family encountered Maximus‘ creation, the Trikon, and were driven from Attilan’s Great Refuge in exile.[1]

Lockjaw first appeared as a member of the Inhumans when they attempted to retrieve Medusa from the outside world and take her back to Attilan. This led them into conflict with the Fantastic Four, the first humans they met, who were harboring Medusa after rescuing her from the villainous Frightful Four. Accordingly, Lockjaw is indirectly responsible for revealing the existence of Attilan to the outside world. They returned to Attilan and became trapped in Maximus’ “negative zone” barrier around the Great Refuge.[2]

Lockjaw is able to escape and becomes separated from his city. He roams the country for some time, accidentally terrorizing the local citizens, until he meets up with Johnny Storm and Wyatt Wingfoot. He journeyed with the pair in their attempt to breach the “negative zone” barrier.[3] Before long, the Inhumans were freed from the “negative zone” barrier, and Lockjaw transported Crystal to New York, and brought Triton from Attilan to rescue Mister Fantastic.[4] Lockjaw was later compelled to return Crystal to Attilan by Maximus.[5]

With Crystal, Lockjaw was captured by Diablo.[6] They later rescued the injured Quicksilver.[7] Before long, Lockjaw attended the wedding of Quicksilver and Crystal.[8] He also brought the Fantastic Four to Attilan to battle Thraxton.[9

pet avengers

Fantastic Four member Mister Fantastic visits Attilan, city of the Inhumans, seeking the six Infinity Gems (each an artifact of great power). Lockjaw, an oversized dog and pet of the Inhuman Royal Family, finds the Mind Gem, which increases the animal’s intelligence. Using telepathy to read Mr. Fantastic’s mind, Lockjaw decides to find the remaining Gems. The pet encounters and recruits a number of other animal companions to heroes, including the cat Hairball, the diminutive dragon Lockheed, the falcon Redwing, the frog Throg, and the puppy Ms. Lion (actually a character from the animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends).

Courtesy of Lockjaw’s ability to teleport, the group visit the pre-historic Savage Land and acquire the Time Gem and the aid of the sabretooth tiger Zabu. The Space Gem is found in the past, and after an underwater encounter and being swallowed by the whale-like Giganto, the group collect the Soul Gem and the Reality Gem. The animal team converge on the final Gem, the Power Gem, which is in the possession of the President of the United States‘ dog, Bo. The Titan Thanos, a previous owner of all six Gems when united as the Infinity Gauntlet, intervenes and kills Ms. Lion. The other animals are angered by this act and use the Gems to strand Thanos in an alternate dimension and subsequently revive their comrade.

Retrieving the final Gem, the group decides to separate, but not before Throg advises that they now share a psychic link and will reunite if needed. Ms. Lion (resurrected by Hairball via the Soul Gem) dubs the group the Pet Avengers. The series concludes with Lockjaw presenting the Gems to a surprised Mr. Fantastic.

The SCPA first appeared in Superboy (volume 1) # 131. Several of the dogs were given alliterative names which also described their powers: i.e. Paws Pooch was able to increase its number of limbs, Prophetic Pup could predict the future using his “crystal ball cranium”, Tail Terrier had an elastic tail, etc.

The team was something of a parody of the Legion of Super-Heroes, with enemies such as the “Phanty Cats”.

  • Tail Terrier: Has an elastic tail that can be used as a rope. “Top Dog” of the SCPA.
  • Mammoth Mutt: Can inflate to many times his size. Died in his first appearance.
  • Hot Dog: Pyrokinetic
  • Tusky Husky: Can turn one of his canine teeth into a long tusk, which is used as a lever.
  • Bull Dog: Can grown horns.
  • Paw Pooch: Can grow additional limbs.
  • Chameleon Collie: Shapeshifter
  • Prophetic Pup: Clairvoyant
  • Krypto: Similar powers to Superman.
  • Mammoth Miss: Mammoth Mutt’s girlfriend, with the same powers.
  • Beam Beagle: Possessed “searchlight eyes”. Died in the line of duty.

Their battle cry and sacred oath, with which they began all meetings, was

Big dog, big dog, bow, wow, wow!

We’ll stop evil, now, now, now!

The first line parodies the Yale chorus: “Bulldog, bulldog, bow-wow-wow”.

They are presumed to have been wiped out of existence after the Crisis on Infinite Earths. They have appeared once in a superhero limbo in Grant Morrison‘s Animal Man “Deus Ex Machina”, where characters that have been written out of continuity reside. While visiting here, Merryman of Inferior Five stated to Animal Man that even if some of these characters may be brought back, times have changed where the Space Canine Patrol Agents (as some of the other animals) will not likely return.[1]

However, with Krypto’s status as the El family dog from Krypton restored, it remains to be seen if they’ll ever be reintroduced into the mainstream continuity or even alluded Krypto ever joined them.

DOGBERT ( Honorary Super-dog, he isnt fighting crime but he is a dork in fuzzy four legged clothing  )

BREED: Beagle

Dogbert is known to protect and help Dilbert when he falls victim to sinister motives. Indeed Dogbert has no problem playing jokes on Dilbert or even being mean to Dilbert, however Dogbert, like any faithful dog, will not tolerate anyone else being mean to Dilbert but him. Dogbert often rescues Dilbert from others. For example, he has prevented Dilbert from being executed by Catbert and has rescued Dilbert from the trolls in accounting several times. He often sits on Dilbert’s lap or walks in the park with Dilbert. Dogbert often gives Dilbert advice on how to solve his problems and is generally shown to have at least some level of respect for him. Adams writes in Seven Years of Highly Defective People that “There’s no explanation of why Dogbert chooses to live with Dilbert, except that he finds him amusing. Once in a great while we’ll see some glimpses of affection. And if Dilbert gets in deep trouble we can count on Dogbert to bail him out.”

The character of Dogbert is a megalomaniac; one of his dreams is to conquer the world and enslave all humans, and he has actually achieved this status several times through methods such as hypnosis and masquerading as a space alien or a prophet. However, he often quickly relinquishes his post due to boredom, someone foiling his chance, his conviction that people do not deserve to have him as leader due to the ongoing peace that results, or his desire to go nap on a soft pillow. In both the strip and TV show he ended up the ruler of Elbonia, although he quickly relinquished the title.

    • Hi Lambert

Thank you for the compliment. This was the first article I wrote that I actually felt the hum of something right. Its nice to know someone else likes it too.

      Cheers !

  1. Of all the entries, I’m not familiar with Cosmo. [Ma-google nga maya-maya] Wow. (Not a Marvel comic book reader. — ang gulo kasi nila!)

Thanks for this one. Kryptonian askal… Hahahaha!! Good one.

    • HE HE HE .. well Ive been looking and I havent found a dog breed that matches Krypto yet.. but I will eventually. The closest Ive seen to a superdog is this Jack Russel Terrier named Skye..but JRTs are too small . But hey, she could be related. ^_^ Maybe Krypto is the ancestor of the Jack Russel Terrier
