[dorky dog: nosework ] NS2 Graduation Batch 1

Instead of an ending it really does seem more like a beginning.

Yesterday Batch 1 of my Nosework 2 Class had just graduated.  My students are a Golden Retriever named Cash, a Dachshund named Hershey, and a Siberian Husky named Watson. I learned a lot from this class, the first and primary one is , though I may have all the documentation necessary to say I can teach detection in the end of it all dogs cant read.

This class made me a better teacher because of the students , canine and human, kept pushing the line. The only one who was very obvious about pushing the boundaries was Watson who was the best in his class in his tenth class of Nosework. For some reason, he decided  that it would be more interesting to hold my heart on a string and attach that string to a roller coaster as he toed the line of disorderly conduct, insubordination, and mutiny for the first 9 classes. I know one cannot prove that dogs have a sense of humor scientifically but Watson has me thinking that science needs to hurry and figure that one out.

Hershey, little Hershey aka SuperGirl, reminds me of my bestfriend … a lot ( obsessively organized, practical, and knows she is smart without being arrogant ) and is probably one of the smartest dogs and bravest dogs I have ever met. Who knew in that teeny tiny princess prancing dog lay a full blooded German Shepherd.  I own a German Shepherd  and I see Hershey as a travel sized version of a working K9 because working with her really felt  like working with the Belgians and German Shepherds I had worked with before. That tiny little dog , with her stroller in tow, is in all and every aspect of the word a working canine.  I even had to be careful when I would tell her owner where the target was because Hershey would go directly to the locations I would say it was. I swear that dog can speak English . The challenge with Hershey was she was too organized . I had to make sure to keep things random for her as possible or she develops a search pattern and wont deviate from it making her time slower than necessary. I felt like Adam Sandler in 50 first dates. I had to keep it different and yet the same over and over again.

[book dork] Invictus by William Ernest Henley. 1849–1903

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
  For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance          5
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,   10
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:   15
I am the captain of my soul.

Never been near a university,
never took a paper or a learned degree,
and some of your friends think that’s stupid of me,
but it’s nothing that I care about.

Well I don’t know how to tell the weight of the sun,
and of mathematics well I want none,
and I may be the Mayor of Simpleton,
but I know one thing and that’s I love you.

2. “Hey, are you busy?” or “Are you doing something?” – two phrases guys open with to stop from stammering on the phone.

3. Guys may be flirting around all day but before they go to sleep, they always think about the girl they truly care about.

[dorky dog: poem] A Golden Day with a Golden

Blog:

This poem is for my dog Chance, a golden retriever, who stood by my side through one of the toughest times in my life.He loved pandesal, tennis balls, car rides, and stepping on my brother’s feet when he could. He didnt care when I shaved my hair, gained or lost weight, or if I talked too much.

Chance was supposed to be put to sleep. He had a habit of  eating rocks and had  undergone 3 surgeries already. My uncle refused to put Chance to sleep and told them there was a home he could place him and that all Chance needed was a home that could address his needs. He was 5 then.

He lived till his was 14 years old  .He never needed any other surgeries and was healthy till the end of his days .

Its been 10 years since he has passed away but I have only been able to talk about Chance recently.

I miss and think of him still .

(Pictures to  follow.)

A Golden Day with a Golden

A golden afternoon on a golden summer day

I follow the soft  padded feet as they trudge

Through a bejewelled emerald field

littered with diamonds that sparkle and shine

unmindful of their limited existence in time

His paws step surely , unmindful of the damp and dirt

The wet leather on his nose brushes across the shadows of the past

he lifts his nose to the air , to feel  the future that lingers  in the air

[my universe: blog] Sim Health Regimen

Day 4 of Sim Health Regimen

Blog:

So the gist of my new health program is I’m treating myself like my Sim.

I  realized certain things that I have spent my time on to “relax” don’t actually relax me one such activity is watching tv. TV is addicting and a couple hours later of potato like behaviour , I feel pretty much the same as I did in the beginning  . Whereas with 1 hour of playing Persona, I feel  recharged enough to tackle painting the cabinet sized canvas in my room .

This behaviour  bore a remarkable likeness to my Sim character. So of late I’ve been experimenting with different leisure activities that my Sim enjoys to  see if is applicable to Real Life.

So  I checked the game first and took note that my Sim is happy with telescopes, chess, painting, and reading .Although I don’t have a fancy for  telescopes I do enjoy people talking to me about astronomy which I didn’t know about till recently.

Also I’ve also added salad to my daily regime of food intake. The theory is if I add enough good things I wont have room for bad things in my system. Plus eating the wrong foods is generally a waste of time in any videogame.  Low nutrition always results in Low HP.. ^_^

So lets start the count today and lets see where it goes..

GAME START

Fight!

Weight: 126

Height: 5’2 ( yes Im vertically challenged )

Speaking of videogames, I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing GamerGirl.  Not really sure what the plan is except not to have one.. Maybe I can convince her to try the Sim Health Regimen..

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

[dorky dog] Videogames will help you with your dog or help your dog with you ( depending on how you look at things )

Blog:

I became a dog trainer quite by accident. So when I  found myself  in Washington beside the police training for Narcotics and Explosives Detection, I had doubts. Of course me being me I didn’t have doubts until I was off the plane but that didn’t change my path. There I was, in the middle of winter, amongst the badges and coffee, quite bewildered and jet lagged.

During my first week there, I had found myself every day standing in line with every book in Barnes and Noble that had a dog picture and every day I stood there and I doubted if I could make it.  I didn’t think I had a chance. My classmates were speaking in a dog-science slang I didn’t understand ,quoting authors, and had more clocked in experience in their  pinky than I had  and there was no way I could ever catch up with 20 years of being a k9 police officer. I was out of my league and was painfully aware of it.

But when we started the hands on training , I slowly started to realize  something. I could deliver the reward ( in this case a tennis ball on a string)  pretty good. Then a familiar feeling came over me, that feeling of stillness  and the sounds start to  fade into the background when you start the motion of a dragonpunch and you hit that strong punch button.

Then in the silence of my head I hear a familiar sound… Shoryuken!!

And I knew, not all is lost. I can do this. Dog training was just like playing a video game!

So I would like to thank every game and publisher  that had slowly and surely marinating skills that would prove useful x number of  years later .  This a quick  list of videogames that have helped me wear the  mantle of warder.. I mean dog trainer.

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

[my universe: blog ] NO TV -day 4

Dear Shiny of all the shiny apples of the universe,

Today is Saturday. Today is day IV of my self imposed NO-TV asylum.  Why should I do that to myself? Have I lost my marbles? What could I possibly accomplish from doing this and isn’t it a bit ironic considering my obsession with cartoons and star trek?

Well, yes in fact I do believe I have lost my marbles. But that  was firmly established pre- tv ban.( checking medication now )

Well during  my convalescence ( round 2 with pneumonia ) I did absolutely nothing but sift through the endless channels of tv like a tacky tourist only interested in eating Mcdonalds and collecting refrigerator magnets. It was a glorious waste of time and I was a glorious waste of space.

and I realized .. I was addicted to TV. TV is a cage. It is my cage.Yes I know its silly . I have unplugged before but this was really really really bad. I think I watched 3 cheer movies in a row. ( how sick is that? and why  are there so many cheer movies in existence? )

That needs to stop .. sick or not.Excuses to no one in the room but me and the TV and the TV , frankly, did not care. But I did. I will not become a potato brain or in filipino – kamote — ( the verb form being kinakamote or something like that). Kinakamote loosely translates to turning into a potato or being so motionless  that a potato..particularly a sweet potato can actually grow on you.

Pathetic.. so pathetic I will not go gently into that good night ( which surely come ) in the form of a potato!Never!

I miss you. Hope things are better on your side of the pond.

[dorky dog: Ali's World- a dog's point of view ] Hello World!

Hello World!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Ali vom Kleiner Hafen. Im a German Shepherd and trained narcotics k9 . I was born in the United States but moved here to the Philippines a couple of years ago.

Living in the Philippines is quite nice. I will have to say things got significantly better after I got used to the weather  and when my human has finally stopped  making me consume  the horrible green shakes she makes for herself she calls the “bat-shake”, which more or less happened about the same time.
