THINKING IN PICTURES
Chapter 1: Autism and Visual Thought
Dr. Temple Grandin
I THINK IN PICTURES. Words are like a second language to me. I translate both spoken and written words into full-color movies, complete with sound, which run like a VCR tape in my head. When somebody speaks to me, his words are instantly translated into pictures. Language-based thinkers often find this phenomenon difficult to understand, but in my job as an equipment designer for the livestock industry, visual thinking is a tremendous advantage.
Visual thinking has enabled me to build entire systems in my imagination. During my career I have designed all kinds of equipment, ranging from corrals for handling cattle on ranches to systems for handling cattle and hogs during veterinary procedures and slaughter. I have worked for many major livestock companies. In fact, one third of the cattle and hogs in the United States are handled in equipment I have designed. Some of the people I’ve worked for don’t even know that their systems were designed by someone with autism. I value my ability to think visually, and I would never want to lose it.
[book dork] How do I love thee ? By Elizabeth Barret Browning
Blog:
I read this poem in the 3rd grade soon after reading Romeo and Juliet. Unlike most girls that age or even older than that ,I sort of thought Romeo and Juliet were both kind of stupid and actually deserved to die. ( Yes .. I was a very cynical 3rd grader , but getting picked on didnt bring the rainbows and sparkles out of me ) After reading this, it restored my faith in humanity and love in general. So I decided to share it just in case there is another cynical 3rd grader out there who doesnt have a copy of this poem in her school library.
Just for those who dont know Elizabeth Barret Browning and her husband Robert Browning have one of the most famous courtships in literature.God knows literary geeks would try to out -do each other when in the poetry department. I suggest EVERYONE who can even spell the word love to read some of their exchanges. It will put things in proper perspective.
Below is my most loved poem of .. love

[Book Dork] Jane Eyre chapter 1-9
Blog: I didn’t really think I was a book worm until after I read Jane Eyre. I found it rather dull in the beginning but couldn’t stop. Eventually, it became so engaging I was losing sleep reading it. The one thing I learned from Jane Eyre wasnt between its pages but the realization that sometimes the best things can come if you are willing to sit through a little boredom. After that I plunged into every book I could find.
Here are the first 3 chapters of Jane Eyre. I hope you stick through it. It is worth it.
Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

Jane Eyre
Charlotte Bronte
Chapter 1
There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.
I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chilly afternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
[book dork] Review: The Belgariad the series
“Garion the farm boy did not believe in magic dooms, but then he did not know that soon he would be on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger when the dread evil God Torak was reawakened.” David Eddings
Blog:
This is one of my most loved ( when I mean love , I mean travel with me to every city, country , planet kinda thing ) books I have ever had. I actually even gave a boy I really really was into the WHOLE series.. which resulted in him not reading it and me trying to get it back. Of course he didn’t and it is probably and it’s collecting dust somewhere or working as a doorstop. ( Okay the doorstop thing is a bit much , he actually takes better care of his books than I do ).
So I wanted to share a nice little review I found of the book on the blogosphere that puts to words almost with every punctuation mark how I feel about the series .
Here is to my futile resistance to all the evil of MTV and trying to turn every single female I meet into a NuDork. ( I am just doing that because someone once told me it couldn’t be done.. If my memory serves me right , it is the same person who said girls couldn’t play streetfighter )

[Science Dork] SUPER HERO SCIENCE ( interview with Jim Kakalios )
I trully am horrible at math. I think I was traumatized at young age and never recovered. But in high school I realized , I was rather good at physics and chemistry if I changed the variables instead of x and y into let say ah .. a happy bunny or I created a story behind the physics problem to calculate weight and momentum of a pendulum with so and so weight to lets say Tarzan’s weight and move the decimal point down later.
Of course it made my teacher laugh and be annoyed at the same time since it really was a waste of time. But being able to laugh through a physics final was more than worth it. ( plus the look of mock annoyance on my teacher’s face was priceless )
Which is why when I saw the book PHYSICS OF SUPER HEROES, dented and little worse for wear in the rather dusty physics section of Fully Booked I knew I needed the book. to the point that I had to borrow money to buy it. ( which reminds me I have to pay that back.. durr )
Here is a nice little interview with its author.

p.s.
I suggest those in High School to actually try this. Its actually quite funny. There really isnt any rule that variables HAVE to be letters. ^_^ oh and tell me how that works out for you.
[doggy dork] Lobo the King of Currumpaw
blog:
I am currently reading a book by Temple Grandin called Animals Make us Human. Im starting to think there is more to be gained by letting dogs teach me rather than the other way around.
Here is a true story of a wolf, that sort of leaves me a bit speechless and is a love story that makes Twilight look like the Disney version .

blog:
I read a lot of books with dogs on the cover. Usually Im fairly democratic about my book choices , if it has a picture of a dog then I’ll buy it. So I have a wide assortment of books that have genuinely surprised me with its content. ( I went through a mad shopping spree at Barnes and Noble my last visit to the states)
This is one of those books.
This book is a compilation of stories from a veterinarian who became a veterinarian when the industry in a slump .But following what is right for your soul, usually results in a really good story.. or in Mr. Herriot’s case really good stories.
I hope at the end of my journey , Ill have an interesting story or two to tell with my dog resting at my feet and hopefully it will have a happy ending.

(excerpt from Dog Stories by James Herrot )
The silvery-haired old gentleman with the pleasant face didnt’t look like the type to be easily upset but his eyes glared at me and his lips quivered with indignation.
‘Mr. Herriot,’ he said, ‘I have come to make a complaint. I strongly object to your callousness in subjecting my dog to unneccessary suffering.’
‘Sufferring? What suffering?’ I was mystified.
‘I think you know, Mr. Herriot. I brought my dog in a few days ago. He was very lame and I am referring to your treatment on that occasion.’
I nodded. ‘ Yes, I remember it well ..but where does the suffering come in?’
‘Well the poor animal is going around with his leg dangling and I have it on good authority that the bone is fractured and should have been put in plaster immediately.’ The old gentleman stuck his chin out fiercely.
[Doggy dork] The Goose Story
author unknown
Next fall when you see geese flying south for winter flying along in a V formation, you might consider what science has discovered about why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By following in a ” V” formation , the whole flock adds at least 71% more flying range than possible if each bird flew on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and and easily because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation , it suddenly feels drag and resistance of trying to go it alone … and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.

As I have said before , my walkthrough for life is Rudyard Kipling’s IF. Steve Jobs has been a personal hero for me for a very long time because he is the first person I have read about that actually was able to
“Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;”
I guess it was why I went to EA , it wasn’t working for Steve Jobs but it was at least in the general direction. I thought if I was somewhere there (physically) I would find what I wanted to love enough to devote the rest of my life .
