[dorky dog] 15 Things to ask before buying a dog or pet

My dog Ali loved running off leash for hours in the snow, particularly at sunset. It was a rough start for us . Wait no let me take that back . It was rough start for me. Ali had a blast.  I got a cold.

BLOG:

As a dog owner, I have been unusually lucky and have gotten very good dogs. Although some I will have to admit , needed a little bit of work. But I have found that I have learned more from my dogs that were a lot of trouble more than my dogs that came with a perfect temparament. I had a golden retriever named Chance that more or less trained itself to walk off leash, sit, down, creep, bark once, spin, beg for pandesal, shake, and step on my brother’s toes everytime ( which my brother didn’t know but I guess he will find out now ). Im not sure how it happened but it did.  I have learned since then Chance was one dog in a million and I am not “just gifted with dogs” which because of him was kind of the impression I had  of myself until I started doing it for a living.

After going through more than a few dog purchases for the company I was previously employed ,  I have learned that asking a few questions, in the beginning will save you a great deal of time and  problems later on.

Of course, there are other ways to find out if that if you are making the right decision. I suggest that the first thing to do is research the dog’s breed and they have a zillion tips on finding out if the dog is right dog for you on the internet.  So if you are purchasing a dog you must first go and be one with the internet and buy a few books. Knowledge  is your friend. ohmmmmm

So to  those thinking of purchasing a new pet to love . I hope this helps ^_^

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

[Game Mistress Dork] my top 20 list of gifts for your geek

BLOG:

I have been stalking the halls of this forum for girls where they have this silly list of what a geek would want for Christmas, like an mp3 player as if we wouldn’t have one already. Girls that arent geeks generally get tips from Vogue or some other fashion magazine on what they think we want. Its usually something along the lines of perfume, gadget they have no idea why it exists, cell phone, mp3 player, watch, and some clothing they want to see us in. So I figured it might be time  to create a wish list of sorts to help our poor significant others who have no clue what a geek, dork, nerd wants.

So I hope this helps and please add anything else you would think would rock your world this Christmas and would make being good all year worth it.

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

blog:

I read a lot of books with dogs on the cover. Usually Im fairly democratic about my book choices , if it has a picture of a dog then I’ll buy it. So I have a wide assortment of books that have genuinely surprised me with its content. ( I went through a mad shopping spree at Barnes and Noble my last visit to the states)

This is one of those books.

This book is a compilation of stories from a veterinarian who became a veterinarian when the industry in a slump .But following what is right for your soul, usually results in a really good story.. or in Mr. Herriot’s case really good stories.

I hope at the end of my journey , Ill have an interesting story or two to tell  with my dog resting at my feet and hopefully it will have a happy ending.

Cheers and may the “ paws” be with you

The silvery-haired old gentleman with the pleasant face didnt’t look like the type to be easily upset but his eyes glared at me and his lips quivered with indignation.

‘Mr. Herriot,’ he said, ‘I have come to make a complaint. I strongly object to your callousness in subjecting my dog to unneccessary suffering.’

‘Sufferring? What suffering?’ I was mystified.

‘I think you know, Mr. Herriot. I brought my dog in a few days ago. He was very lame and I am referring to your treatment on that occasion.’

I nodded. ‘ Yes, I remember it well ..but where does the suffering come in?’

‘Well the poor animal is going around with his leg dangling and I have it on good authority that the bone is fractured and should have been put in plaster immediately.’ The old gentleman stuck his chin out fiercely.

WHAT IS IT:

BLOG:

At first, I had my doubts about the American comic book shaped like manga. In addition to the fact that the artwork is a bit different from what I typically enjoy. But I got the recommendation from someone who knows the very depths of my geek-ery . Plus all my dreams of late have dog themes which are starting tiresome since I wake up thinking I have just come from work.

[dorky-dog] Eulogy of a Dog

“Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

[dorky-dog ] Dogs 101 and assorted trivia

(excerpt)

Dogs are cute. They give unconditional, drool-filled devotion. They make you feel like you’re the king or queen of the world. It’s nice to see their furry bodies wiggling and their tails wagging with happiness each time they see you.

However, taking care of dogs requires commitment. So, if you want to own one, better do your research first. Professional dog trainer Jojo Isorena of Better Dog Canine Behavior Center shares these useful facts — and other interesting trivia — about man’s best friend.

1. They’ve been around for a long time. Recent studies reveal that dogs and wolves split into their own species approximately 100,000 years ago. And while the oldest dog skull to date was discovered in Goyet Cave, Belgium, these animals are generally believed to have come from Southeast Asia.

BLOG:

Dogs could care less about why we like to have them sitting by our feet but not let them on the bed, our strange preoccupation with bathing, and all the other strange quirks we have and impose on them. Despite all of our eccentrities they decide we are worth our weight in hot dogs anyway. Even if it means “behaving” properly in human if it means leaving their precious treasure ( tennis ball ) just to greet you hello .
